Zimbabwe to revitalize asbestos mine
Zimbabwe may soon get into the asbestos mining business as it mulls whether to make the investment to revive an old mine.Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation announced that it would soon start mining the naturally occurring mineral at the Shabanie Mashava Mines, according to The Zimbabwean.
ZMDC chairman Godwills Masimirembwa said that a large amount of capital will be needed to revitalize the mine.
"An exercise is going on with our forensic auditors to determine how much is needed to recapitalize Shabanie Mashava Mine," he told the news source.
Asbestos was once used across the globe as an insulator and flame retardant. However, it has been proven for decades that exposure to asbestos can cause malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. Due to these risks most developed countries have stopped mining asbestos, with the notable exception of Canada.
That country has been embroiled in an asbestos controversy in recent months, with some government officials attempting to revitalize an asbestos mine in Quebec. Many members of opposition parties as well as the international medical community have vehemently opposed such efforts to mine and export asbestos.
