Welsh workers to receive free asbestos training
Workers in Wales will have access to asbestos training free of charge under a program run by the Health and Safety Executive, the UK's workplace safety organization.According to a release from the agency, more than 230 hours of in-person training and 5,570 of online training have been pledged.
Such training is vital for workers in blue collar professions such as construction and welding as those with these careers can encounter asbestos on a daily basis. Asbestos was once used in the construction of older buildings because of its insulating properties and resistance to flames. However, exposure to asbestos can cause malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer, making it essential that workers are educated on how to deal with the substance.
HSE regional director Rosi Edwards said that recognizing the dangers of asbestos is essential for many workers.
"This training will save lives by getting tradesmen to realize that their day to day job could - completely unintentionally - expose them to asbestos," she said. "The training will help them recognize where they may come across asbestos, how to recognize it and what to do about it and prevent this hidden killer from claiming another generation of British tradesmen."
