Waste dumped in UK forest may contain asbestos
A significant investigation is expected to be carried out in order to discover whether or not waste buried at an illegal landfill in the UK contains asbestos and poses a health risk to local citizens, ThisIsHampshire.net reports.Experts are expected to spend at least three months analyzing the waste material, which is sitting underneath a field in the New Forest National Park, according to the news provider.
Three months ago, Kenneth Lovett, who owns the land, was fined £3,000 for not clearing the waste from the site. Lovett reportedly admitted to failing to follow an order to remove waste from land that was adjacent to his home. New Forest officials were told that some of the waste had been taken from the site, but that a significant amount still remained.
An initial examination conducted by the URS Corporation on behalf of the Environment Agency indicated that the waste site contained zinc, lead and aluminum. The 18-page report also warned of the possibility of asbestos in the waste.
Exposure to asbestos can cause a range of serious illnesses including asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that occurs in the tissues surrounding many of the body's internal organs.
