UK woman succumbs to mesothelioma after years of factory work
A 47-year-old woman from Gainsborough, England, recently passed away as a result of malignant mesothelioma more than 25 years after she was reportedly exposed to asbestos while working in a factory.According to the Lincolnshire Echo, Larraine Kirk suffered for 10 months with the deadly disease before she ultimately passed away. Kirk, who first complained of stomach problems last January, was found to have a tumor in her bowel a few months later in June.
As a machinist, Kirk reportedly worked in a factory between 1980 and 1984, where she was likely exposed to asbestos. An inquest heard that during Kirk's employment at the factory, repairs were made to asbestos-containing pipes while workers remained at the site.
Deputy coroner Paul Smith recorded a verdict of death as a result of an industrial disease, according to the news source.
In addition to malignant mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos has been proven to cause lung cancer and asbestosis. Such asbestos-related illnesses are responsible for the deaths of approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, according to the World Health Organization.
