UK woman seeking asbestos compensation from husband's former employers
A woman from Carlisle, UK, whose husband reportedly died of malignant mesothelioma is suing the man's former employers for compensation exceeding £300,000.According to the News & Star, former electrician Peter Walters died of malignant mesothelioma approximately three weeks after being diagnosed with the condition. Vivien Walters, the man's widow, is reportedly seeking damages from Lorne Stewart plc, the successors to HAT Engineering Services and David Thomson.
The news source reports that Peter Walters worked for the firms between 1969 and 1998, during which time he was allegedly exposed to asbestos while working on roofs and installing light systems.
Vivien Walters claims the companies were negligent in requiring her husband to work around asbestos dust and that they failed to provide proper protection or a means of avoiding asbestos exposure.
In addition to malignant mesothelioma - a rare form of cancer that occurs in the tissues surrounding most of the body's internal organs - asbestos exposure can cause lung cancer and asbestosis.
