UK woman dies after being exposed to asbestos during working career
A Cumbrian, UK woman recently passed away from malignant mesothelioma after she was reportedly exposed to asbestos on the job years ago, according to the News & Star.The news source reports that Phyllis Noel Newton, 88, a great grandmother, died in January after the mesothelioma she was suffering from spread from her lungs to other parts of her body.
Newton's son reportedly told an inquest that his mother had previously been employed by Tom Mandle's builders' merchants where she was often tasked with cleaning around and moving asbestos-containing materials.
"She didn’t like untidiness. Everything had to be clean. If there was any dust lying around she’d sweep it up," her son told the inquest.
North and west Cumbria coroner David Roberts recorded a verdict of death as a result of an industrial disease, according to the news source.
In addition to malignant mesothelioma - a rare form of cancer - asbestos exposure can lead to the development of lung cancer and asbestosis.
