UK woman died of mesothelioma after washing husband's asbestos-containing clothes
An inquest heard recently that a UK woman died from mesothelioma after reportedly washing her husband's asbestos-containing work clothes for years. The Grimsby Telegraph reports that 60-year-old Susan Campbell died of malignant mesothelioma on November 15 and a large tumor was discovered in one of her lungs.
In a statement written by Campbell following her mesothelioma diagnosis in 2006, Campbell explained that she was "at a loss" when attempting to figure out when she could have been exposed to the carcinogenic material.
Eventually, Campbell said she realized that the exposure likely occurred when she washed the clothes of her husband, George Campbell, who worked fixing pipes that were lined with asbestos, according to the news source.
The news source reports that George Campbell was not present at the inquest and that it is not believed that he suffers from an asbestos-related illness.
In addition to malignant mesothelioma, asbestos exposure can cause lung cancer and asbestosis.
