A woman from East Ayrshire, UK, whose husband reportedly died from malignant mesothelioma in March 2007 has received £258,520 in asbestos compensation, reports the BBC.

According to the news source, 69-year-old Elizabeth Wolff filed an asbestos lawsuit against her husband's former employer, Weir Construction Ltd., which reportedly admitted that the man's disease was caused by asbestos exposure on its watch.

Judge Lord Doherty reportedly awarded the asbestos compensation at the Court of Session in Edinburgh, the news source said.

"It is very clear to me that [Elizabeth Wolff] did her utmost throughout the deceased's illness to meet all his needs; and that as the illness progressed this became increasingly demanding," Doherty said. "Other family members did what they could to assist her but she bore the brunt of it."

Often, a mesothelioma diagnosis comes during the latter stages of the disease, when it is too late to effectively treat the condition. In addition to malignant mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos has been proven to cause lung cancer and asbestosis.
