UK to bring back asbestos warning ads
Advertising warning of the dangers posed to the construction industry by asbestos will return to the UK after a year or so hiatus.According to the Mirror, the "Hidden Killer" campaign will return after it was ended by the Tories, who did so to cut expenses. However, union leaders said that such warnings are important to keep working men and women informed of the dangers posed by asbestos.
"A fresh phase of the campaign is long overdue. It saves lives," builders' union Ucatt leader George Guy told the news source.
Asbestos poses deadly dangers to everyone, but those in the construction industry are especially at risk. The naturally occurring substance was widely used as an insulator and flame retardant for many years, so asbestos exists in many older buildings.
If the asbestos in these buildings is disturbed during renovations or other such work, it can cause a number of serious illnesses like asbestosis, malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer if it is inhaled.
According to the news provider, more than 2,000 people died in the UK as a result of the cancer mesothelioma last year.
