UK seafront projects to receive funding for asbestos survey
The extensive repairs needed on a number of seafront properties in Hastings, UK, will reportedly receive a boost of £50,000 in order to allow for asbestos surveys and other work, reports the Hastings Observer.According to the news source, a significant chunk of the funding will go towards removing debris from the sites in order to increase their marketability. However, the environment is also a major concern, as funding will be provided for asbestos surveys on the buildings, the news provider said.
Virginia Gilbert, the head of leisure and amenities at the Hastings Borough Council, told the news source that such asbestos testing was critical before the debris could be taken away.
"An asbestos survey is also necessary to reveal the extent of any asbestos within the rubble prior to removing," she said.
Testing whether or not debris contains asbestos is a crucial aspect of construction and renovation projects, which can often release the dangerous mineral fibers into the air. The inhalation of such fibers can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare cancer.
