UK school closed after asbestos find
A school building in the UK was recently closed after asbestos, a naturally occurring carcinogen, was discovered in the structure. The Westacre Middle School in Droitwich has been closed since the beginning of February, when the hazardous material was found, according to the Worcester News.
When asbestos is discovered in any building it is vital that it is dealt with swiftly as exposure to the deadly mineral can cause malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. It is especially important that asbestos is managed and handled properly in schools as the symptoms of such illnesses may take decades to manifest themselves, meaning that children who have been exposed to the substance may be unaware that they have developed a disease for years.
A Worcestershire County Council spokesman told the news source that the asbestos would be removed from the school hall.
"Maintaining the health and well-being of pupils and staff at the school is our highest priority, which is why the decision has been made to temporarily close the school hall to allow the asbestos to be removed," he told the news source.
