UK residents raise concerns over asbestos-handling site
UK residents living near an asbestos-handling site have raised concerns about the potential for them to come in contact with the carcinogenic substance.Workers at Solent Environmental Services (SES) in Holbury routinely wear respirators and suits to protect them from asbestos, but those who live near the company enjoy no such safeguards, according to the Southern Daily Echo.
SES works in the asbestos abatement field, removing the hazardous substance from buildings and then storing it at their site. The company says that those who live near their asbestos-storage facility are not at risk for contracting an asbestos-related disease. It says that a greater risk for contracting such an ailment is more likely to occur from a do-it-yourself project.
Asbestos exposure can cause a number of serious illnesses such as asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare and deadly cancer that attacks the thin membrane that lines the chest, abdomen and many of the body's internal organs.
According to the Mirror, a UK newspaper, malignant mesothelioma kills a person every five hours in the UK.
