UK residents fear asbestos material used in making of woodland path
Residents near Wappenbury Wood in the UK are upset over fears that the environmental charity in charge of the area used waste that contained asbestos when creating a path.According to the Coventry Telegraph, Warwickshire Wildlife Trust had a contractor lay the path through the woods. Residents had some of the detritus found in the path analyzed and were taken aback at the results.
"It's basically just fly-tipping," Linda Hutton, a neighbor to the farm and a volunteer for the Trust, told the news source. "We were suspicious about some of the pieces which looked like asbestos so we got four pieces analyzed by an independent laboratory and three of the four were either asbestos or had asbestos fixed to them."
The Trust said that its initial tests of the material came back negative but it would more fully investigate the matter.
"Both the Trust and our suppliers/contractors will not rest until this matter is satisfactorily resolved," a statement from the Trust reads.
The inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause a number of serious illnesses such as malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
