UK resident upset after asbestos discovered in garden
An Enfield, UK man recently referred to the Enfield Homes housing association as a "disgrace" after asbestos was reportedly discovered in the soil the group used for filling his garden, reports the Enfield Independent.According to the news source, James Paul asked the housing association to level out the garden due to steep hills that prevented his children from playing in it. However, when contractors completed the work, Paul discovered that the soil used contained metal, glass and asbestos.
"I have two young children and have not let them play in the garden [because] I am frightened of them being exposed to any level of asbestos whatsoever," Paul told the news provider.
Paul claims that workers from the housing association explained to him that the asbestos found in the soil was at a safe level, and did not present any health risks to people in the area.
Even low-level asbestos exposure can have serious consequences including the development of asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 107,000 people around the world die each year as a result of asbestos-related illnesses.
