UK resident expresses concern over handling of asbestos
A man in York, UK, is expressing frustration toward local officials for not fully responding to an asbestos situation.Resident Michael Morgan has criticized the City of York Council for its handling of asbestos-containing material that was allegedly falling from the ceiling at his apartment building complex, according to the York Press.
"We got a letter from the council on April 27 which told us not to worry about it, just to keep our windows closed," he told the news source. "A council workman came round and threw it in a public bin, then sent Environmental Health people round, who packed the bin in plastic and took it away."
Morgan said that while the material has been taken away, the grass on which it rested has not been cut in weeks because of fears that it may contain asbestos dust.
The inhalation of this dust can have serious consequences as asbestos exposure can cause malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
Local authorities have told the news source that random air testing has taken place at the facility and has shown that no one in the area is at risk.
