UK organization releases shocking mesothelioma data
Even though the use of asbestos has been tightly restricted in the UK, new data released by the watchdog group Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reveals that the incidence of mesothelioma is still on the rise among Britons. In a report based on the nation's Mesothelioma Register, researchers announced that the number of cases of the disease has increased from 153 in 1968 to 2,321 in 2010. The organization explained that men who worked in the construction industry at at the highest risk of being stricken with mesothelioma, due to potential asbestos exposure.
Statistics from the U.S. are similarly dire, with at least 3,000 new cases of the disease diagnosed annually, according to the American Cancer Society. After factoring in other asbestos-related diseases, the total number of American deaths caused by the exposure to the mineral tops 10,000 per year, the Environmental Working Group estimates.
The implications of the HSE report are quite serious, especially for the many undeveloped nations that still produce or purchase millions of tons of asbestos.
Currently, 125 million people come into contact with asbestos each year, according to the World Health Organization.
