Mesothelioma News

UK nurse exposed to asbestos in tunnels of hospitals
A former nurse from Waltham, UK, died recently in St. Andrew's Hospice in Grimsby from malignant mesothelioma, which she reportedly contracted through exposure to asbestos in the tunnels of the hospitals where she trained.

According to the Grimsby Telegraph, 71-year-old Shirley Burns was told by doctors that there was nothing they could do to save her from the deadly disease.

Paul Kelly, the district coroner for North East Lincolnshire, said that he believed the disease was the result of occupational asbestos exposure due to previous similar incidents involving the tunnels of the training hospitals.

"There is a proven link between asbestos used in these tunnels and later incidents of mesothelioma," Kelly explained, according to the news source.

Regardless of where the asbestos exposure occurs, the Mirror - a UK newspaper - estimates that approximately one person dies every five hours from mesothelioma in Britain. In addition to malignant mesothelioma, asbestos exposure can cause lung cancer and asbestosis, which stems from a prolonged accumulation of the dangerous mineral fibers in the lungs, according to the Mayo Clinic.
