UK man's death ruled the result of asbestos exposure in the workplace
The death of a UK man who inhaled deadly asbestos fibers while working as an apprentice plumber as a 15-year-old has been ruled the result of an industrial disease 58 years later, the Bradford Telegraph & Argus reports.An inquest in Bradford, UK, recently heard that the family of the worker, Geoffrey Bell, is currently seeking compensation for the man's March 2010 death. Bell had reportedly left school as a teenager to be an apprentice for two years before he ultimately left the company for other jobs, the news source said.
The inquest also heard that Bell had told his family he was exposed to asbestos on a daily basis while working as an apprentice. In his final years of life, Bell reportedly suffered heart problems and strokes, as well as malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that can be caused by asbestos exposure.
In addition to malignant mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos has been proven to cause asbestosis and lung cancer. The World Health Organization estimates that asbestos-related diseases kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year.
