UK man jailed over accusations of illegal asbestos dumping
A man from Crowborough, UK, was jailed recently after allegedly dumping building waste including asbestos-containing materials in various streets and setting it on fire to cover it up, reports the Sussex Courier.According to the news source, 32-year-old Lee Coleman will serve a sentence of more than four months after he reportedly admitted to a number of illegal asbestos dumping incidents. Coleman, a registered waste collector, allegedly dumped the asbestos that he was paid to properly dispose of.
"People have paid him money to have things responsibly disposed of, then the next thing it's been dumped down the road," said local councilman Jarvis Brook. "He should be made to pay what it cost to clean it all up."
It is important that asbestos is handled with care and disposed of properly as the inhalation of the deadly mineral fibers can lead to the development of asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.
Such illnesses kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, according to the World Health Organization.
