UK man fighting mesothelioma raises awareness about asbestos
A Huntingdonshire, UK man currently suffering from the rare cancer malignant mesothelioma is working to raise awareness about the dangerous consequences of asbestos exposure.According to the Hunts Post, 64-year-old David Phillips worked as a travel agent for 40 years, but only once realized he had worked with asbestos while cleaning a storage cupboard and being covered in dust.
Phillips, who has undergone chemotherapy, radiotherapy and an operation, has reportedly been told that nothing else can be done to treat his condition.
Despite the illness, Phillips is working hard to raise awareness about the dangers of asbestos, as he jumped 1,400 feet from an airplane to raise money for a local mesothelioma charity last year, according to the news source.
"It is one of those things that has been kicked under the carpet. It affects people from all walks of life," he said. "At the moment, it is affecting a lot of teaching staff that were in schools. The thing I am a bit concerned about [is] children being affected."
In addition to mesothelioma, asbestos exposure has been associated with the development of lung cancer and asbestosis.
