Mesothelioma News

UK man dies of mesothelioma caused by asbestos in prefab home
A UK man recently passed away from malignant mesothelioma, and a coroner's inquest was told that the disease was caused by asbestos present in the man's prefabricated home.

Arthur Brown didn't work in a job that in decades past involved asbestos exposure - such as shipbuilding or pipe-fitting - but his home reportedly contained the naturally occurring substance, according to the Burton Mail.

Brown's son, Frank, told the inquest that he recalls the prefabricated home that he grew up in.

"Although he never worked in the asbestos industry, my first recollection of the home I was living in was just after the war, when we were living in prefabs, which were made of asbestos," he said.

While Brown also had a heart illness, South Staffordshire Coroner Andrew Haigh said that the mesothelioma - a rare and deadly cancer that typically affects the lungs - was the main reason Brown died.

"There were two main factors in Mr. Brown's death - heart disease and lung disease. Having said that, however, the lung disease is the significant contributory factor," the coroner said.

Malignant mesothelioma isn't the only disease caused by asbestos exposure as lung cancer and asbestosis can result as well.
