UK man dies of lung cancer after being exposed to asbestos
John Saunders of Portishead, UK, contracted lung cancer and died recently after he was reportedly exposed to asbestos while working at the Portishead Power Plant, the Weston & Somerset Mercury reports.

According to the news provider, the 89-year-old Saunders was admitted to the hospital last February and tests indicated that he was suffering from "extensive" lung cancer. On the same day that he was admitted to the hospital, he died four hours after a routine procedure designed to collect cell samples.

Dr. Christopher Collins, who conducted the postmortem, said that Saunders had a large amount of blood in his airways, but said that the hospital procedure was not the cause.

Gail Elliman, assistant deputy coroner, said that it was "more likely than not" that asbestos, which Saunders was reportedly exposed to for 20 years, was the cause of his lung cancer.

In addition to lung cancer, asbestos exposure has been proven to cause asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that occurs in the tissues surrounding a majority of the body's internal organs.
