UK man allegedly dumped asbestos in road
A Plymouth, UK man is accused of illegally dumping asbestos and other waste on country roads, the Plymouth Herald reports. The Torquay magistrates heard recently that James Martin Smith performed the illegal activity on roads just outside of Plymouth. They said that the offense was even more troublesome because Smith had received asbestos handling training and was involved in the asbestos removal industry.
The magistrates added that the separate waste piles had both been dumped in the middle of public roads, which created a hazard to drivers in the area.
For the incidents, which occurred last year, Smith received a suspended sentence of four months in prison, 150 hours of community service work and 12 months of supervision, according to the news provider.
Smith was also ordered to pay £904 to the South Hams District Council, which brought the charges against him.
Illegal asbestos dumping can pose a serious health risk to nearby citizens as exposure to the dangerous mineral has been proven to cause a range of serious illnesses including malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
