UK library temporarily shut down for asbestos removal, other repairs
Alsager Library in the UK has been temporarily closed in order for repair work and upgrades including asbestos removal to be completed, the Crewe Chronicle reports.According to the news provider, the library is set to re-open on February 28 after this work and other improvements to the layout and first floor meeting room are finished.
In addition, new self-service facilities will be installed with the goal of assisting those who are taking out, returning or renewing books, the news source said. During the temporary closure, there will be no overdue charges levied.
Andrew Knowles, a cabinet member for health and well-being, said he was asking patrons to be patient while the renovation work is completed.
"Libraries play a vital role in improving community life and hopefully through the improvements we are making, we can persuade more people in Cheshire East to use them," Knowles said.
It is important that asbestos is handled properly and removed during renovation work as the inhalation of the deadly mineral fibers can cause a number of serious illnesses including asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma.
