UK family sues steel company after man's mesothelioma death
The family of a former UK businessman who reportedly died of malignant mesothelioma has filed an asbestos lawsuit against TATA Steel, one of the largest steel companies in the world, the Scunthorpe Telegraph reports.Jim Williams, who had three children, worked in the steel industry for 20 years, according to the news source. Williams' family claims he was exposed to asbestos on the job between 1963 and 1967 at the former John Lysaghts steelworks facility.
Williams was reportedly diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma - a rare form of cancer - in July 2008 and passed away three months later at the age of 71. The complaint claims that the asbestos exposure occurred when Williams would sweep dust and debris at the soaking pits where he worked.
The family believes the debris contained asbestos that came from nearby pipes and other materials that allegedly contained the substance.
In addition to malignant mesothelioma, asbestos exposure can cause lung cancer and asbestosis. The World Health Organization estimates that 107,000 people around the world die each year as a result of such asbestos-related illnesses.
