UK family seeks re-location due to asbestos concerns
A Nuneaton, UK family is reportedly looking to be re-located from their one-bedroom publicly-owned apartment that they claim is "dangerous and unsuitable" due to disturbed asbestos. The Coventry Telegraph reports that Tracy Lewis, her partner Jamie Skelton and the couple's 2-year-old son live in the apartment and believe that their health is at risk because of asbestos being disturbed in a boiler room.
"We had numerous problems with the old boiler, which kept breaking down and actually blew up at one stage," Lewis told the news provider. "The council eventually fitted a new boiler in the kitchen and taped up the vents on the cupboard door, without doing anything about the asbestos."
The couple has reportedly written to the local council, which owns the apartment, and has held meetings with Town Hall officials in order to voice their displeasure.
It is critical that asbestos is handled and removed properly when it becomes disturbed as exposure to the dangerous mineral can cause a range of serious illnesses including malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
