UK family receives asbestos compensation 60 years after initial exposure
More than 60 years after a man from Cheltenham, UK, was exposed to asbestos, his family has finally received compensation from his former employer, the BBC reports.According to the news source, William Evans succumbed to malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that attacks the tissues surrounding most of the body's internal organs, earlier this year.
Evans' family, who sued BAE Systems, reportedly recovered a £92,000 settlement after the company accepted liability, the news source reported. The company admitted that it was responsible for exposing Evans to asbestos on the job.
Evans, who worked for BAE subsidiary AW Hawksley Ltd. from 1947 to 1950, claimed that he had not been warned of the dangers of asbestos exposure and did not wear any protective clothing during his employment. The work reportedly involved drilling asbestos-containing sheets.
In addition to mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos can cause lung cancer and asbestosis. Such illnesses kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, according to the World Health Organization.
