Asbestos News

UK family forced from home following asbestos discovery
A young UK couple has reportedly been told to leave their home after asbestos concerns arose during routine repair work, according to the Shields Gazette.

The news source reports Chris Mann and his pregnant wife Helen have left their home in South Shields because they fear for their health, as well as that of their 1-year-old son.

The landlords, Places for People, reportedly confirmed that asbestos had been discovered above the family's home, but Helen Mann said the issue had not been properly taken care of since July.

"I’ve never had any problems until now, but this is just ridiculous," she told the news source. "It’s been going on since July. I’ve spoken to my midwife and she said it’s not safe to live in the house with the damp and asbestos, but Places for People are still demanding that I pay the rent."

Living in such a house can increase the risk of asbestos exposure, which can lead to a number of serious illnesses including asbestosis, malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer.

According to the news source, Places for People has apologized to the family for the delay in the repairs.
