UK factory worker dies from possible asbestos exposure
Perhaps proving that airborne asbestos can lead to deadly health risks, an employee from Moreton Sundoor, a fabrics factory, died from a rare cancer that was caused by inhaling poisonous fibers.Helen Moody-Grant died at St. Peter's Hospice in Brentry, UK, after being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma in October 2008, according to the Evening Post. During an inquest, it was revealed that she had begun working for the company when she was 16 years old, and she reported that the factory's heating pipes contained asbestos fabric that would often fall onto her desk and on the floor.
"Maintenance workers were required to fix damaged roofs, which would leave a lot of dust on the floor," she wrote in a prepared life statement that was presented during the inquest. "Each morning one of us would sweep the dust up into one pile and then we would pick it up with a dustpan and brush."
This kind of episode is not uncommon, as exposure to airborne asbestos fibers not only causes malignant mesothelioma but asbestosis and lung cancer as well.
