UK daycare center cleared after asbestos scare
The St. Albans Leisure Center's daycare facility is reportedly safe from asbestos after it was initially closed on June 17 for renovation work on an area known to contain the carcinogenic material reports the Brimbank Leader.According to the news source, the work - which included the installation of a new kitchen and the replacement of floor tiles - was immediately shut down when the Brimbank Council became aware that asbestos violations may have been occurring.
"The council was made aware that its policies in respect of these works may not have been as closely observed as council requires," the council's community well-being general manager Kelly Grigsby told the news source.
Despite the scare, WorkSafe reportedly inspected the daycare facility and deemed it safe from asbestos and the facility is set to re-open this week, the news provider said.
Asbestos exposure is a particularly alarming threat for children as the symptoms of asbestos-related illnesses such as lung cancer, asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma may not manifest themselves until decades after initial exposure.
