UK council development project delayed after asbestos discovery
Asbestos discovered at the Loddon House in Basingstoke, UK, will reportedly delay a council redevelopment project, according to the Basingstoke Gazette.

The news source reports that the asbestos was discovered in columns and panels at the Loddon House, which is scheduled to be demolished. The asbestos discovery could reportedly increase the demolition project tab by £370,000.

While the asbestos discovery was certainly a scare, officials say that there is likely no health hazard posed to local residents.

"It was impossible for anyone to have detected the asbestos in the structure through the original surveys, and it was only when demolition started that it was found," said councilor Ranil Jayawardena, the finance and property cabinet member of the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council. "The contractor has acted quickly in revising the plans to complete the demolition, ensuring there is no risk of public safety."

Exposure to asbestos has been proven to cause a number of serious illnesses including asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.
