UK coroner rules welder died of malignant mesothelioma caused by asbestos
A coroner's court in the UK recently ruled that a man who worked for about a decade as a welder died from malignant mesothelioma. The Derby Coroner’s Court heard about the life and career of William Paskin, according to the Burton Mail.
The court heard that Paskin worked for Warren Brothers as a welder at a number of different power stations from 1961 to 1971. In a statement prepared before he died this past October, Paskin detailed how his work exposed him to asbestos.
"I could always see the asbestos hanging in the air — it looked like snow," his statement read.
In December 2009, Paskin went to the hospital complaining of chest pains. He was then diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma, a rare cancer, and died about 10 months later.
Deputy coroner Louise Pinder ruled that Paskin died of malignant mesothelioma, and it was a result of industrial disease.
In addition to malignant mesothelioma, asbestos exposure can cause asbestosis and lung cancer.
The World Health Organization estimates that 107,000 people die each year around the world as a result of asbestos-related illnesses.
