UK coroner: Man's mesothelioma caused by asbestos exposure
An avid walker in the UK recently passed away from malignant mesothelioma, which is caused by exposure to asbestos.A North and West Cumbria coroner's inquest heard that Robert Burns worked in a number of colleges and universities throughout Britain, where asbestos was commonly found, reports the News and Star. Asbestos was used in the construction of many buildings as it was once prized for its resistance to fire and insulating properties.
The preponderance of the naturally occurring substance in buildings - as well as in a number of industries such as auto maintenance and shipbuilding - has resulted in many people being exposed to asbestos. Such exposure has been proven for nearly 50 years to cause not only the rare cancer malignant mesothelioma, but also asbestosis and lung cancer.
The World Health Organization estimates that these asbestos-caused diseases claim the lives of approximately 107,000 people each year around the world.
Coroner David Roberts recorded the cause of death as an industrial disease.
The news source reports that Burns' family said that the man was a hard worker who left school early to get a job after his father left the family.
