UK coroner: Housewife's death caused by indirect asbestos exposure
A coroner's inquest in the UK recently heard that a housewife's mesothelioma death was caused by her exposure to asbestos on her husband's work clothes.Late last year, Pamela Whitemore was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure, and died just five days later, according to the Derby Evening Telegraph.
Deputy coroner for Derby Louise Pinder recorded Whitemore's death as a result of industrial disease caused by coming into contact with asbestos on her husband's clothes.
"There was more handling of clothes than there would have been in the modern-day process," the coroner said. "Mrs. Whitemore was exposed indirectly. She was exposed in some way that was connected to employment, albeit her husband's employment."
At the inquest, pathologist Andrew Hitchcock said that the connection between Whitemore's asbestos exposure and her mesothelioma was "very strong."
Whitemore's husband, Ronald, drove a truck and frequently carried bricks, pipes and other asbestos-containing items, according to the couple's daughter, Jacqueline Higgins.
In addition to malignant mesothelioma, asbestos exposure has been proven to cause asbestosis and lung cancer.
