UK construction safety workshop to cover asbestos procedures
Construction workers in a UK region are being encouraged to attend a free safety seminar to learn about asbestos-handling procedures and other practices to reduce the risk of experiencing an injury on the job.The event, which will be held in Crewe on March 16, was spurred by the death of two construction workers in Cheshire last year, according to the Crewe and Nantwich Guardian. It is being run by the Health and Safety Executive, the UK's federal work-safety agency.
"We're here to offer support and advice to construction companies and their employees, and are encouraging builders to come along to this free event," HSE health and safety awareness officer Joseph Wood told the news source. "We're offering tips on improving health and safety on construction sites but we will continue to take action in cases where there is a high risk of injury or ill health."
The proper handling of asbestos is essential as exposure to the naturally occurring mineral can cause a number of serious illnesses such as asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare cancer.
