UK construction company fined over alleged asbestos contamination during work
A construction firm in the UK has reportedly been fined £20,000 after the possessions of an elderly resident were allegedly contaminated with asbestos during renovation work performed by the company at sheltered housing. The Nottingham Post reports that Abbott and Mason Building and Joinery Contractors of Mansfield is also accused of leaving asbestos-containing materials outside of the building, potentially putting local residents at risk of being exposed.
The company was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Britain's workplace safety agency, after it performed the renovation work at the home of a 96-year-old woman, according to the news source.
In addition to the fine, the company has been ordered to pay legal costs after it pleaded guilty to five asbestos violations, the news provider said.
"Their actions caused a great deal of worry and stress from [the woman], who has since passed away," said HSE inspector Frances Bailey.
Exposure to asbestos can cause a range of serious illnesses including asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.
