UK college building demolition held up by asbestos
Asbestos has caused significant delays during the demolition of the last remaining structure of a former college in the UK.The razing of the old theater at Tresham College on St Mary’s Road in Kettering, was supposed to start weeks ago but a large amount of asbestos has held up the demolition, according to the Evening Telegraph.
While delays in demolition can be frustrating - particularly for developers that wish to put up residential units - it is vital that asbestos is properly handled during such projects. If a building is demolished that still contains asbestos fibers, those fibers can become airborne and inhaled. The inhalation of asbestos has been proven for decades to cause not just lung cancer but malignant mesothelioma and asbestosis as well.
The site manager for the project, Rob Brown, said that the project would be back on track within a few weeks.
"There was a lot of asbestos and that’s what has caused the delays," he told the news source. "But we’re going alright at the moment, it should be down in a couple of weeks."
