UK church re-opened following asbestos scare, break-in
A church in Peppard, UK, re-opened recently after a break-in that led to concerns that asbestos may have been released into the facility, according to the Henley Standard. The news source reports that All Saints' Church was temporarily closed while an investigation was conducted to determine whether or not the carcinogenic material had been disturbed during the raid.
Rector Reverend Canon Graham Foulis Brown told the news source that the burglars were likely searching for money, but ultimately did not leave with anything. He added that a white substance covering the vestry tested negative for asbestos, allaying fears.
Concerns about the release of asbestos fibers into the environment are not unfounded, as the inhalation of these fibers can have serious health consequences including the development of lung cancer, asbestosis and the rare cancer malignant mesothelioma. Such illnesses kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, estimates the World Health Organization.
According to the news source, citizens with information about the church break-in have been encouraged to contact local authorities.
