UK campaigners seek training for asbestos handling in schools
A group of asbestos victim supporters in Bradford, UK, is seeking more awareness training about the handling of the carcinogenic material in schools, reports the Bradford Telegraph and Argus.

According to the news source, the Bradford Asbestos Victims Support Group is looking for an audit of Bradford schools and for teachers, caretakers and health officials to receive asbestos awareness training.

The campaign to bring asbestos awareness to local schools has reportedly been growing louder since the death of Bradford teacher Graham Butterfield, which the news source reports was linked to an asbestos-related cancer.

"Unfortunately an increasing number of school teachers are dying from mesothelioma after having being negligently exposed to asbestos in schools," group spokesman Jane Howie told the Telegraph and Argus.

In addition to malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer, the inhalation of dangerous asbestos fibers has been associated with the development of asbestosis and lung cancer. Approximately 107,000 people around the world succumb to such asbestos-related illnesses each year, according to the World Health Organization.
