UK bowling alley closed following asbestos discovery
The Harborough District Council in the UK recently shut down a bowling alley after an inspection indicated that asbestos located in the ceiling needed to be dealt with.According to the Harborough Mail, the closure of the Welland Park Bowling Club - which hosts 68 members - was announced to the members via email, with the club needing to change their home matches to away games.
Sheila Carter, a member of the club, told the news source that she has concerns about how long the asbestos materials have been unstable for, noting that she had previously seen white powder falling from the ceiling.
A spokesman for the council explained to the news source that the asbestos was found during an inspection, and the alley was closed for health and safety reasons.
"The council is working on bringing the building back into use as soon as possible and is in the process of commissioning a specialist contractor to carry out remedial work," he said.
Taking precautionary measures is critical when it comes to asbestos, as exposure to the carcinogenic substance has been proven to cause malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.
