Asbestos News

UK authorities quarrel about removal of potentially asbestos-containing bag
A bag that was dumped on the front lawn of a property in Worcester, UK, which was believed to contain asbestos, has mysteriously disappeared.

The Worcester News reports that the bag that was suspected to hold the carcinogenic substance was on the lawn for several days as government agencies debated whose responsibility it was to remove it. However, before the government could intervene, the bag was reportedly taken away by an unknown person.

The news source said that when it spoke with the Worcester City Council, it was told that the removal of the bag was the responsibility of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Britain's federal work safety agency. However, when contacted, the HSE reportedly said that it was the council's job.

This reportedly left the owner of the property where the bag was left upset at the government's inaction.

"I've been a builder since I left school and I know how hazardous asbestos can be," the resident, who did not want to be named, told the news source. "Nobody has shown any [willingness] to do anything about it when it could quite clearly be a danger to anybody walking past it."

Quick action on asbestos threats isvital as exposure can cause lung cancer, malignant mesothelioma and asbestosis.
