UK asbestosis sufferer fought for other victims
A former UK power station worker who succumbed to asbestosis on Christmas is being remembered for his tireless efforts to help other victims with asbestos-related illnesses. The South Yorkshire Times reports John Ullathorne originally worked as a farmer prior to serving as a laborer at Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire, England. Ullathorne battled asbestosis since he was diagnosed in 2004, but did not allow the disease to stop him from campaigning on behalf of other victims, according to the news source.
One asbestos attorney, who reportedly got to know Ullathorne while working on asbestosis cases, told the news source the man did everything he could to help others fighting similar battles.
"Despite his illness, John was a tireless campaigner for the rights for compensation for people with asbestos disease," the asbestos lawyer said. "John was a real character and a great support to me and others in raising the plight of asbestos victims. Even in the poorest of health he was worried about others."
In addition to asbestosis, exposure to the carcinogenic substance has been proven to cause lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare and deadly form of cancer.
