Two truckloads of asbestos waste dumped in England
Two loads of highly toxic asbestos-containing waste were recently discovered dumped by a reservoir in the UK.The incident is only the most recent instance of fly-tipping, British slang for illegal dumping. The waste was discovered on the property of United Utilities near the Delph Reservoir, according to ThisIsLancashire.com.
Darwen Council environmental crime officer Richard Waters told the news source that it was one of the largest instances of illegal dumping that he could recall.
"It is a headache for United Utilities. It has blocked a pathway and I believe they were doing some work up there," he told the news source. "We don't know how they?e got it up there as yet but we have been collecting evidence. We have a good record on catching and prosecuting offenders."
Illegal asbestos dumping presents many hazards to those in the area. Typically such activity does not see asbestos properly sealed, meaning that the deadly mineral fibers can become airborne and escape. These fibers can cause a number of serious illnesses such as lung cancer, asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare and deadly cancer.
