Mesothelioma News

Two UK co-workers die of asbestos-caused malignant mesothelioma
Two UK men who worked at a carriageworks both died of malignant mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure, according to a coroner's inquest.

Edward Horsman and Harold Abbott were employed by York Carriageworks, where they were exposed to asbestos regularly in the course of their work, reports The York Press.

Horsman began working at the company in the 1940s, a period when asbestos use in a variety of industries was rampant as the naturally occurring substance was prized for its insulating properties and utility as a flame retardant. However, it has been proven that exposure to the substance not only causes malignant mesothelioma, but asbestosis and lung cancer as well.

Abbott worked in the facility for three decades starting in the 1960s. Like Horsman, Abbott was frequently exposed to asbestos while employed at the works.

"The dust would get everywhere," he said in statement prepared before his death. "I would never wear any form of face mask."

York Coroner Donald Coverdale recorded both men's deaths as the result of the industrial disease malignant mesothelioma, according to the news source.
