Swimming event in Canada honors mesothelioma victim
More than 30 swimmers recently participated in the Fifth Annual Swim for Jim event in Salmon Arm, British Columbia. The event is held each year in memory of Jim Casselman, who was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2005, the Salmon Arm Observer reports.

The proceeds from this year's events go towards the Asbestos-related Research Education and Advocacy (AREA) Fund. The fund was established "to provide a funding source for the wide variety of asbestos-related research, education and advocacy initiatives that individuals and organizations are undertaking," according to its website.

Casselman, who was one of the founders of swimming programs in Salmon Arm, was an industrial education, computer science and math teacher in the town from 1974 to 2003, according to the news source. His exposure to asbestos is traced back to his early days of teaching, according to the AREA website.

In addition to mesothelioma, asbestos exposure has been proven to cause lung cancer and asbestosis. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 107,000 people worldwide die from asbestos-related diseases each year.
