Survey: More former asbestos mine workers in India than initially thought
A recent survey conducted by India's Mine Labor Protection Campaign (MPLC) found that there are more former asbestos mine workers in the country than originally expected, reports the Times of India.

According to the news source, at least 275 former asbestos mine workers have given proof of their prior employment through receipts. Typically, these employees worked for low wages and in difficult conditions, but Rana Sengupta of the MPLC told the news source he hopes that the workers will be able to receive the compensation they deserve if they contracted an asbestos-related illness.

"The prime reason for these workers not getting any of their claim under the Workmen's Compensation Act is that they are not able to prove their employee status. But these receipts will make all the difference now," he said.

According to the survey, the highest percentage of those who worked in asbestos mines were between the ages of 35 and 45, with many of these former employees now suffering from asbestosis.

In addition to asbestosis, exposure to asbestos has been proven to cause lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.
