Study: Asbestos health risks often overlooked
According to a recent study conducted by Canadian researchers, the health risks of asbestos and lead paint in walls can often be overlooked during renovation work, Reuters reports. The report indicated that the retrofitting of such buildings can lead to the release of the hazardous substances into the air, which can be extremely dangerous for anyone in the area.
"Without sufficient care, retrofits...can increase the health risks," said Theresa McClenaghan, executive director of the Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA).
The inhalation of asbestos fibers has been proven to cause a range of serious illnesses including asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. The symptoms of many of these diseases may not appear until decades after initial asbestos exposure.
The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 107,000 people around the world die each year as a result of asbestos-related diseases.
According to the news provider, asbestos was used in the construction of between 300,000 and 400,000 Canadian homes until it was removed from the market in 1990.
