Students evacuated after asbestos scare in Australian schoolSeveral classrooms at an Albion North primary school in Australia have been evacuated due to concerns that asbestos-containing materials have entered the classroom, the Herald Sun reports.
Representatives of the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) recently visited the school and discovered "unacceptable breaches" of certain regulations regarding asbestos demolition, according to the news provider.
CFMEU representative Shaun Reardon said he had to tell children to leave a fenced-off work area several times.
"I wouldn't want one of my kids going here," Reardon told the news source. "All this crossed fiber has been blowing across the play area all morning."
The site in question is the project to provide the school with a new administration building, the news source said. Work was supposed to have already been completed at the site.
The Department of Education has not yet commented on the concern.
Asbestos exposure is proven to cause a number of deadly diseases including asbestosis and mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the tissues surrounding the majority of the body's inner organs.
