Still no action on asbestos-contaminated valley in UK
The site of the world's largest asbestos tile factory in the UK still contains a large quantity of the carcinogenic substance, prompting outrage among some residents. The Spodden Valley in Rochdale was once the home of the Turner Brothers Asbestos Company but now the area is covered in asbestos waste. A number of developers have tried to get projects approved for the area but have come up short.
MMC, a company that sought to develop the land, had its application rejected in January of this year because it failed to show that it could safely handle the asbestos on the site, according to the Rochdale News.
William Hobhouse, Chairman of the Turner Brothers Asbestos (TBA) Working Party, said that he was upset that more action has not been taken regarding the site.
"I am disappointed that no progress is being made to make the Turners site safe for future generations," he told the news source. "We've been saying for years that a proper program of asbestos testing needs to be carried out across the site."
Exposure to asbestos can cause serious diseases such as malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
