Mesothelioma News

Son of UK asbestos victim warns others of potential health consequences
The son of a former teacher who died last October as a result of malignant mesothelioma is warning his previous colleagues and students about their own potential health risks.

According to Gazette Live, Nick Teasdale believes others who were at Billingham Campus School with his father, Norman, may have also been exposed to asbestos and could be in danger of developing a related illness.

Norman Teasdale was reportedly exposed to the carcinogenic substance from 1962 to 1975 during his tenure as a metal and woodwork teacher at the school in Teesside, the news source said.

He was diagnosed with asbestos-related pleural plaques in June 2009, but the condition eventually became malignant mesothelioma, which led him to file an asbestos compensation claim. The court eventually found in favor of the man's widow, according to Gazette Live.

Apart from malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that attacks the tissues surrounding a majority of the body's internal organs, exposure to asbestos can cause lung cancer and asbestosis. Such illnesses kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, according to the World Health Organization.
